Best Books for Young Adults - The SECRET AT CHiCHEN iTZA! | by Casey Grace & Landis Grace Feb. 04, 2012 | 51296 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Living in an ancient Mayan world nestled in the virgin jungles of the Yucatan has given my 12 year old daughter Landis and I encounters of a lifetime. Our Mayan friends have shared with us many secrets of their culture and we have experienced many of their customs and ceremonies. There are many mysteries and legends of this ancient race, and my daughter Landis and I started this series to share some of these fascinating traditions in a fun mystery book which educates the readers not only into the everyday life of the traditional Mayans still living in pueblitos but into authentic ancient customs through flashbacks in the book. Landis and I are Canadian, so I am thrilled that my daughter is completely fluent in her second language of Spanish, so we added some easy-to-remember Spanish words to teach readers a little of the language. All of the facts throughout the book are true, but they are presented in an entertaining fictional style with a closing message of integrity and wholesomeness. We are writing our next Landis Adventure book called “The Mystery at Isla Mujeresâ€, which takes place on a beautiful island nestled off the coast of Cancun, in the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. |

Millennium's Children: The First Wave - Sanctuary | by Austin Carroll Feb. 03, 2012 | 86314 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I live in Australia and this is the first full length book that I have 'put out there' so to speak. Imagine me quite literally quaking with fear as I anxiously check to see if anyone has posted a review about my book. Even a bad review would be welcome! Why? Because I need to know. Have I been wasting my time writing? Have I virtually given up my social life (not to mention my nonexistent love life) for something I am absolute crap at? Or is it possible, no matter how slim the chances are, that I can tell a story that others will enjoy. Some days, it’s what keeps me going – the sheer possibility. I am driven to write. Ideas fill my head every minute of the day while I’m at work. I am constantly scribbling down thoughts on anything I can get my hands on at the time. Writing can be such a lonely business in many ways, and it is hard to get honest feedback from family... 'Yeah – love your book.’ 'Er – thanks – but are you sure you’re not just being nice – that you don’t want to hurt my poor little feelings – or cause a family feud?’ Honestly, I would have preferred some honest criticism. Something I could work with to strengthen my stories. Every book has faults. When I am not writing, I can be found working at a high school, supporting students with learning and social difficulties who are struggling to find their place in a world that can be far too cruel. That is my other passion in life (after writing and my son). Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy my story, and if not, I hope you can take a moment to tell me why. |

The Yellow Canvas | by Marysue Hobika Jan. 30, 2012 | 2225 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Marysue G Hobika grew up in Caledonia, NY and attended State University of New York at Buffalo where she studied to be a Spanish teacher. Currently she lives in Pittsford, NY with her husband, three children, and her pug. Bio in Marysue’s own words… Hi, I’m Marysue G Hobika, and yes I like the G because it says a lot about who I am and where I come from. I’m from a small rural town called Caledonia, which is about 20 miles outside of Rochester, NY. Nothing can really compare to growing up in small town where you know everyone and everyone knows you. My high school graduating class had only 96 students, so it is safe to say that I knew them all. Many of my ideas come from my childhood and having lived in this tight knit community. It was a safe place to grow up and I remember riding my bike all over town with my friends and my cousin, stopping at the AM/PM minimarket to buy candy or big 32oz sodas. During the winter we played out in the snow and even tooled around on my friend’s snowmobile until I kept making us crash because I wasn’t leaning the right way. It was a happy childhood and one I wouldn’t change for anything. Before heading off to college, I decided to spend a year as a Rotary exchange student. I was curious about what it would be like to live in a foreign country and truly be assimilated into their language and culture. I had taken Spanish in high school and it had immediately clicked, so Spain was a logical choice for my study abroad. I spent a year in the Canary Islands and my passion for the foreign language blossomed. A quote I once heard was, “To speak two languages is to have two souls.†And that is exactly how I feel. Who knows when I might decide to weave details from my experience into a book? When it was time to go to college I was ready for a big school setting with little anonymity, but I didn’t want to be too far from home. I chose to attend college at SUNY at Buffalo to study to become a Spanish teacher. I was a Spanish middle school teacher until I decided to stay home and raise a family of my own. Currently I live in Pittsford, NY with my husband, three children and a pug. My house is a busy place with kids coming and going. They all offer inspiration for my books. I’ve been a big reader all of my life and so about two years ago I decided it was time to sit down and write one of my own. I started with a character, Mikayla who goes by Mike, whom had been bouncing around in my head for about one year. And from there the rest of the story fell into place. I would get up early every day to go running and as soon as I got home I would sit at my computer and pound out Mike’s story. It was summer and my house was quiet for a couple of hours and I took advantage of it. Once my first story was complete, it wasn’t long before another popped into my head and began to take shape. One thing I have learned is that stories don’t write themselves. I try to make time every day to sit down and write. I find I do my best thinking when I’m in the shower, driving my kids around, or right before I fall asleep. I always keep a moleskin notebook handy that a dear friend of mine gave me as a gift, so that if an idea occurs to me I can write it down. I don’t know where this journey will take me, but I know I still have a lot of stories inside of me that are dying to get out. My inspirations: • my family • my friends • my town • trips I’ve taken • students My obsessions • running • books • lulemon athletic clothes • chobani yogurts • scrapbooking • photography • my backyard |

| Author bio: I am an unemployed architect. My future, which suits me just fine, will be that of a substitute school teacher, advanced guitarist and instructor of guitar, Volvo restorer and conspiracy theorist. And novelist. I would be delighted to have any feedback on my works. Most of all, please read "The Undergrad" also available at Smashwords. |

Moldable Youth: A Collection of Poetry and Prose | by Amy Tuso Jan. 22, 2012 | 3453 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Amy Tuso writes stories about high school because she knows the importance, value and overall impact those four short years have on all of us. She remembers high school in graphic detail, yet chooses to still spend her days within it halls. She is a social worker specializing in substance abuse and violence prevention in a high school setting. She has found that in high school what is normal becomes grey and is based more in perception than reality. Her stories represent both the perceptions and the realities of growing up; they are a journey through clichés, brutal honesty and true friendship. She believes that what doesn’t destroy us makes us stronger, but being strong doesn’t mean having all the answers. |

The Witches: An Extraordinary Tale | by Gerrard Wlson Jan. 16, 2012 | 2011 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I am Gerrard T Wilson, the crazymad writer of children's stories. Although my works are primarily aimed at children, adults can and, indeed do, read them with as much interest and excitement. I like to think that my work has a universal appeal, spanning the generations, the sexes and even the continents. I have written so many stories, including 'Tales of the Extraordinary' (short stories with a unique, sometimes chilling appeal), 'Ali-bonkers', 'Fizzy Cherry Cola', and 'The Witches', also 'Forget the Celebrities -Read about My Crazy Life' (weird and bizarre tales from my absolutely crazy-mad life), 'Alice on Top of the World' (a follow on story to Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass), 'HARRY, oh, she is a ROTTER (she's bad - and has lost her Magical Marbles), and 'Jimmy, the Glue Factory and Mad Mr Viscous' (Jimmy is trying to stop Mr Viscous from rendering the horses into GLUE). I also wrote 'Nursery Rhymes - MY CRAZYMAD WAY' (my own unique slant on some familiar rhymes), 'My CRAZYMAD Poems' (a collection of strange, oddball, oftentimes bizarre poems, including 'Are you Normal?', 'Conkers Bonkers', 'Louco's Preferred Drink', 'Sparky Parents' , and 'I'm NOT Mad'). There is also 'Bolf' (a Troll whose idea of a having good time is eating empty cigarette packets!). You will also read about 'Fle' (an extremely old elf who lives in a fertilizer mine), 'Fairy Tales' including 'The Three Faerie Sisters', the 'Little Brown Frog', and 'A Christmas Story'. Next up is 'God, dog and Beelzebub' (what (what on earth can that be about?), 'Greengrocer Jack and the Talking Cabbages' (trying to stop a giant Yam from taking over the world), 'Poor Jane', and 'A Punt across the Thames' (I almost drowned that day!). Last, but certainly not least, I also wrote Wot, Nott, Kakuri and the HU BA HOU', a series (three quadrilogies) featuring the oddball Outlanders, Wot and Nott. Instead of giving your child that extra toy for his or her birthday, a book is a far better option. Preferably one of mine, I am sure they will treasure it long after their toys are abandoned at the back of that dusty old wardrobe. Signed: The Crazymad Writer - ARRRGH. |

| Author bio: Jansina has been writing ever since she could do more than make meaningless scribbles with a crayon. She began her writing career at 13 with a newspaper column, Jansina's Journal. Her goal is to create realistic Christian fiction for young adults that will both entertain and inspire. This is her first published novel, though she has over one hundred published articles, short stories and poems in various newspapers and magazines (including the Saint Paul Pioneer Press and Brio). She is a native of Minnesota, and a few years ago discovered Backus, a little-known town of 300. Although she may never live there herself, she lives vicariously through her characters. Jansina is in the process of writing two additional novels, and several short stories-all with the setting loosely based on that little town. Many of the characters in Forgotten Memories play larger parts in those stories. When not writing, Jansina works in marketing, and also copy edits others' books, scholarly papers and articles. In her spare time she enjoys Irish and swing dancing, singing, and rereading Austen's novels. She doesn't spend much time in cemeteries. |
