Hang Yao Sneaked Out
Hang Yao was the youngest kitten in his family. His oldest sibling called “Big Sis” or “older sister”. The oldest brother called “Tah Fah” or “blue eyes”. The third brother called “Lai” or “tabby”, but everyone called him “the Naughty Lai”. And, of course, the youngest member of this meow meow family was Hang Yao, the beloved little brother.
When Hang Yao was born, he was much smaller than his other siblings. His Mama said that probably because his tail was way too long. Hang Yao used to think that when he is finally full grown, his tail must be long enough to wrap around the planet Earth. Tah Fah only chuckled when he heard that. Big Sis let out a hefty sign while Lai kept his mouth shut.
Hang Yao didn’t like his long tail. Because of it, Lai called him a weird cat and Tah Fah never missed tying Hang Yao’s tail with a leg of a table or a chair when the youngest brother didn’t notice. All of that because his tail was way too long.
Only Big Sis said she liked Hang Yao’s tail.
“It’s unique.” Big Sis said.
Hang Yao didn’t understand what ‘unique’ mean. Then, Big Sis added, “It’s easier to find you when you sneak out to play outside.” Hang Yao didn’t think that reason is good for him.
Today, Hang Yao was successful in sneaking out to play outside but…Hey! Where’s Lai?! How can Hang Yao find the way home now? He needed to scout the area first. There! That was a flower shop at the corner. Next was the fish store (yummy!) But all these were unfamiliar to Hang Yao. Wait…What was that sound?
Clang. Clang. It was sound of a bell jingling far away. Right then, a white cat just disappeared at the end corner of the road! “Is that Big Sis?”
Hang Yao hurriedly ran after the cat, but it was too late. He couldn’t find the white cat anywhere. Where should he go now? There was nobody on his left neither on his right. Hang Yao was getting scared. Maybe Lai intentionally led him here to desert him because he was a weird cat. Tah Fah enjoyed bullying Hang Yao too, so he wouldn’t be worried for sure. Big Sis might have been annoyed with the long tail of Hang Yao, too.
When he got nervous, Hang Yao always absently twisted his long tail.
Smash!
Hang Yao felt as if someone stepped on his tail. It was the Naughty Lai who was pushing his paw on Hang Yao’s long tail.
“Brother Lai.” Hang Yao called out shakily.
“Call me Lai the Greatest.” Lai hissed, staring at him. “I’m not a mere tabby cat.”
“Lai the Greatest.” Normally Hang Yao wouldn’t call him that easily, but he was starving. If he had to call him Lai the Holiness, he would.
“Follow me and hurry up. It’s getting dark.”
“Yes.” Though Lai was scolding him, Hang Yao kept smiling.
Lai led Hang Yao to the park. He pointed at a bright red balloon stuck high on a lamp pole. “Release that balloon.” The Naughty Lai ordered.
“Meow…but it’s too high.” Hang Yao complained.
Lai bared his fangs and hissed. “Use the extremely long tail of yours.”
“That’s right.” Hang Yao replied. “Brother Lai is so smart.”
Lai hissed again. He kept silent that this was Tah Fah’s idea.
The balloon was still in sight when Big Sis and Tah Fah rushed up toward them. Tah Fah shouted scolding at Hang Yao, but Big Sis was so silent. She looked at Hang Yao from head to tail and turned her back to Hang Yao. Hang Yao wished Big Sis would scold him for once. What was wrong with her?
That evening, Hang Yao couldn’t eat much. The fish wasn’t as yummy as it used to be. He wasn’t sure it was because he was too tired like what Tah Fah told him. Hang Yao thought it was rather because Big Sis didn’t say a word to Hang Yao since they were at the park.
Hang Yao couldn’t sleep that night. His heart sank like never before. Just thinking that Big Sis would never talk to him again made him feel like crying.
Wait a moment. What was that sound?
It was Big Sis’ bell. Hang Yao pretended to be asleep. He was still too afraid to look into his sister’s eyes. Strange enough, the sound of the bell was getting nearer and nearer. Warm breath touched his ear. Hang Yao felt a bit ticklish but his heart almost burst out. At least he knew Big Sis didn’t hate him. He should do something about this.
Hang Yao suddenly lifted his face causing Big Sis a bit startled.
“Big Sis, I’m so sorry.” He said. “Hang Yao is sorry to make you angry.”
“And do you know…why I am angry?” Big Sis asked.
Hang Yao was speechless. “Because I sneaked out to play outside.”
Big Sis shook her head. “Because everybody’s worried about you.” She smiled.
Hang Yao saw Tah Fah and Lai, who were secretly watching until then, walked out. He was half joy, half regret.
“I'm really sorry.”
Big Sis gently rubbed her chin with Hang Yao’s head without a word.
As soon as Hang Yao stopped crying, Lai jumped on Hang Yao’s back.
“I’m tired.” He said and put his legs on Hang Yao’s body.
Tah Fah chuckled before whispering loudly. “Lai is excusing himself to hug you.”
Lai hissed and turned away. “I want to put my legs here. Is there a problem?”
“No, no.” Hang Yao immediately replied.
Hang Yao tried, but he couldn’t help laughing softly. Lai must realize that Hang Yao was shaking.
“I’m tired. Sleep.” Lai announced.
That night everybody slept together. It was warm. When Hang Yao was half asleep, he thought he heard Tah Fah said something.
“Sneaking out to play outside must be well-planned. I’ll teach you how to read a map later.”
Was that his imagination? Maybe Hang Yao was dreaming…or maybe not.
About the Author
Kindergarten: drawing. Elementary school: reading children books. Post elementary: writing poems. Pre-high: reading Manga (and has been addicted since then). High school: addicting to suspend stories, science documentaries, and fantasy fictions. University: drown in translated fictions. That is the development of a born-Bangkokian fayfena who never left her home far enough for her satisfaction. She lives in Bangkok through her years of Kindergarten, pre-school, high school, university, and work. Now, she just loves reading and writing. (Any doubt?) Fayfena works on all above. Though not all thing comes out as she expected, she can't keep her hands away from them.
When she was a little girl, fayfena had hoped that her house would turn into a magic portal. Too bad such thing never happened. So she thinks it might as well creating them herself. In spare times, she draws, writes poem (if the mood struck), and happily lies down reading a novel, or manga, or watches Japanese animations rather than goes out for shopping or watching movies.
