Matteo is six years old. He lives in a loving family with his father, mother, sisters, Abuelita and Abuelito. Matteo is very close to his Abuelito. They do everything together.
Matteo es un niño de seis años que vive con su familia muy amorosa. Matteo vive con su padre, madre, hermanas, abuelita y abuelito. Matteo está muy encariñado con su abuelito. Hacen todo juntos.
Each morning, Abuelito wakes Matteo up, and helps him pick out his clothes for the day. They sit together to have breakfast, and they walk together to school. After school, Abuelito picks Matteo up and listens to all of his adventures. Matteo and his Abuelito like spending time together.
Cada mañana, Abuelito lo despierta y le ayuda a escoger su ropa para el día. Se sientan juntos para desayunar y caminan juntos a la escuela. Todos los días, Abuelito lo recoge de la escuela y escucha todas sus aventuras. A Matteo y a su abuelito les gusta compartir tiempo juntos.
One day, on their way back from school, Matteo and his Abuelito stopped at the park. Matteo asked, “Abuelito, can you play with me on the monkey bars?” “No mijo, I am too old.” he answered. “I can’t play on the monkey bars,” and they started walking again.
Un día, de regreso de la escuela, Matteo le pidió a su abuelitoque pasaran por el parque. Matteo preguntó: “¿Abuelito, puedes jugar conmigo en el pasamanos?" "No mijo, yo soy demasiado viejo" —le respondió. "No puedo jugar en el pasamanos," por lo que siguieron caminando.
Next, Matteo saw bikes for sale. He got very excited and asked his Abuelito, “Can we ride bikes together?” His Abuelito replied, “No mijo, I am too old to ride a bike.” Disappointed Matteo kept walking.
Luego, caminaron enfrente de una tienda de bicicletas. Matteo se emocionó mucho y le pidió a su abuelito: “¿Podemos andar en bicicleta juntos?" Su abuelito le respondió: "No mijo, yo soy demasiado viejo para andar en bicicleta”. Decepcionado, Matteo siguió caminando.
Later, Matteo came across his friends playing hopscotch. Matteo asked his Abuelito again, “Please, please can we play hopscotch?” His Abuelito slowly bent down and said, “Mijo, my knees are too old to jump like that.” Matteo waved goodbye to his friends and they walked home.
Más adelante, Matteo se encontró a sus amigos jugando rayuela. Matteo le pidió a su abuelito otra vez: "¿Por favor, por favor, podemos jugar rayuela?" Su abuelito se inclinó lentamente y dijo: "Mijo, mis rodillas están demasiado viejas para saltar así". Matteo se despidió de sus amigos y se fueron a casa.
When they got home, Matteo was not happy. He went straight to his room and closed the door. Abuelito felt sad, so he spoke with Abuelita. He told her about his day. Abuelita reminded Abuelito of all the things that he could do. Abuelito had an idea.
Al llegar a casa, Matteo estaba triste. Se dirigió directamente a su habitación y cerró la puerta. Abuelito se sentía triste también, así que habló con Abuelita. Él le contó acerca de su día. Abuelita le recordó a Abuelito que se acordara de las cosas que sí PODIA hacer y fue entonces cuando Abuelito tuvo una idea.
Abuelito went to Matteo’s room and said, “Matteo, I want to show you something. Come here.” Abuelito pulled a strange toy out of his pocket. He said, “When I was your age, I used to play with a top.” Matteo had never seen a top before. But when he saw how much fun Abuelito was having, he wanted to join in. He liked playing with such a strange toy. Matteo was happy.
Abuelito entró a la habitación de Matteo y dijo: "Matteo, quiero mostrarte algo. Ven aquí". Abuelito sacó un juguete extraño de su bolsillo. Él dijo: "Cuando yo tenía tu edad, jugaba con un trompo". Matteo nunca había visto un trompo. Pero cuando vio cuanto se estaba divirtiendo Abuelito, él quiso intentarlo. Él quería jugar con el juguete extraño. Matteo era feliz.
Next, Abuelito said, “I may not be able to ride a bike, but I can teach you how to ride a caballo.” Abuelito grabbed a broom and started riding the broom like a horse. “Woohoo horsey!” he yelled. Matteo followed. They both galloped around the room playing. Matteo was happy.
Abuelito luego dijo: "No puedo montar en bicicleta, pero te puedo enseñar a montar a caballo". Abuelito agarró una escoba y comenzó a montar la escoba como un caballo. "¡Arre caballito!" –gritó. Después fue el turno de Matteo. Ambos galopaban alrededor de la sala. Matteo era feliz.
In the garage, Abuelito opened a dusty trunk and took out his old military uniform. He let Matteo wear it and pretend to be a soldier. Matteo felt grown up and important. Abuelito was his favorite hero. Matteo was happy.
En el garage, Abuelito sacó un baúl cubierto de polvo y lo abrió. Dentro estaba su uniforme viejo de militar. Él dejó que Matteo se lo pusiera y que pretendiera ser un soldado. Matteo se sentía grande e importante. Abuelito era su héroe favorito. Matteo era feliz.
The next day, during Thanksgiving dinner, everyone spoke about what they were thankful for. When it was Matteo’s turn, he stood on his chair and said, “I am thankful for my family, especially my best friend, my Abuelito.” Everyone cheered and clapped.
Al día siguiente, durante la cena de Acción de Gracias, todos hablaron sobre la razón por la cual estaban agradecidos. Cuando fue el turno de Matteo, él se paró en su silla y dijo: "Estoy agradecido por mi familia, especialmente por mi mejor amigo, mi abuelito". Todos lo animaron y aplaudieron.
That night when Abuelito put Matteo to bed, he kissed his little forehead and said, “Goodnight mijo! You make me feel young.” Matteo replied, “Goodnight Abuelito! You make me happy.”
Esa noche, cuando Abuelito acostó a Matteo en la cama, le besó su pequeña frente y le dijo: "Buenas noches mijo. Tú me haces sentir joven". Matteo le respondió: “Buenas noches Abuelito. Tú me haces feliz".

ANUEL
MARTINEZ was born in Mexico City, Mexico. His family moved to the
US when he was 8 yrs old. He graduated from CAL Polytechnic
University in Pomona, CA. with a BA in Business Management. His wife,
ERIKA PERRET-MARTINEZ was also born in Mexico and immigrated
to the United States with her family as a child. Erika attended
California State University Fullerton and graduated with a Bachelor
of Arts in Sociology and Gerontology. Growing up, Erika and Manuel’s
lives were greatly influenced by the presence of many extended family
members in the home. They wrote Matteo And His Abuelito to pay homage
to the invaluable role that grandparents play in nourishing the lives
of their grandchildren. Erika and Manuel currently live in Los
Angeles, CA with their three children: Giselle, Matteo and Miranda.
This is their first children’s book. Manuel has been an employee of
Infinity Insurance for twelve years.

ALOMON
DUARTE was born in Michoacán, Mexico. His parents moved to the
U.S. when he was 2 years old. He discovered a passion for art as a
child. He started drawing in 7th grade and won a few contests. He has
pursued art solely as a hobby until now. Salomon's daughter¬in-law,
Rosie Rivera Flores, who has been an employee of Infinity Insurance
for four years, encouraged him to apply as a Read Conmigo
illustrator. Matteo And His Abuelito is his debut as a children’s
book illustrator. He currently lives in Whittier, CA with his
beautiful wife, Karina, and his four wonderful children: Abel,
Marcos, Jasmine and Amanda.
