STELLA MONDAY
Girl In Motion

The warm Carolina sun cheered in the early morning sky as Stella Monday drove the moving truck across town as if it were an Army tank. She’d spent a good part of the evening before packing up the meager belongings of her boyfriend, Noah Parks. Soon to be ex-boyfriend, she reminded herself as she steered the truck to the side of the quiet neighborhood street.
I want this to be a surprise. Stella mumbled to herself while searching the small manicured yard for Noah’s Harley. Or, to be more factual, the Harley she purchased for him on his last birthday. A gift. She fingered the key inside her jean’s pocket and allowed a smirk to grow in the corners of her mouth as she strode past it on the way to the front door. It was parked without much thought to it being discovered by a suspicious girlfriend.
Before knocking, Stella drew in a deep breath. She wasn’t nervous or angry. Instead, she felt liberated. Unbeknownst to Noah, she’d received a letter from her late father’s lawyers. He had been a true rebel if ever there was one. His detective agency was now hers. The timing of Noah’s infidelity was perfect timing, if there could be such a thing.
It took two attempts of pounding on the door before she summonsed a response, from a short-haired brunette who appeared to be in her late twenties, around her own age.
“Good morning, would you kindly give these to Noah for me?” Stella handed the woman a set of keys. Stunned, the brunette took them.
As she walked back down the walkway, Noah’s voice called out. “Stella, what are you doing here?” He snatched the keys from the brunette and followed.
She whirled around. “You’ll be needing your things.”
“This isn’t what it looks like,” Noah stumbled over his words.
“Really, because this looks really bad…for you. I’m leaving town.”
“What?” Noah moved towards her on the walkway in an effort to prevent the brunette from hearing the conversation. “Can we at least talk about this?”
“About this?” Stella, eyebrows arched, resumed her march down the walkway. “We’re through, Noah. Good bye.”
“Are my things in that moving truck?”
“Yup.”
“You’re taking my things with you? What about my matchbook collection?”
She never really did get the point of that silly hobby, but what the heck, it had led her to Noah. He obviously didn’t realize his new side dish had written him an incriminating note inside one matchbook cover. See you Saturday night, along with her phone number, which Stella had traced through her connection at the cell phone company.
“Oh, everything’s there. And I’m not taking the truck. You are.”
Without another word, Stella climbed onto the shiny black seat of the steel horse with large chrome pipes that weren’t stock.
Noah ran towards her; reasoning, clad only in his pajama bottoms. “Stella, what am I supposed to drive to work?”
Between growling revs of the beastly machine, she answered with a nod towards the stunned brunette still standing in the doorway, “I’ll bet she’ll give you a ride. She is the business associate you were out of town on a very important conference with, right?”
“You’re just like your father,” he yelled angrily. But his words were nearly drowned out by the thunder of the roaring engine. As she gunned the throttle down the open road, Stella allowed the wind to rush through her hair, extending her long curly locks behind her like a child’s kite on a breezy day.
“We’ll find out,” she shouted to the wind.
