Chapter One

I go both ways. I was forced into it. West or east. I prefer west. Dallas was always too snooty for me. When I started my career in 1984, in Dallas, the town was the epicenter of commerce and booming. Everyone thought they were "players". Like they have always thought they are in LA.

Fort Worth is different. It is western. The people are nicer. The barbeque is better. And the Tex-Mex. And the zoo.

It wasn't a difficult choice. The two firms in Dallas had serious shortcomings. The Fort Worth firm, though harder to negotiate a "Dallas-size " salary with, was closer and seemed to have a future.

The only problem was the senior partner. The junior partner was tolerable. An early-balding-strawberry blonde-overachieving type. The senior partner was sullen; to say the least. And balding. He came in for the last moments of the interview and seemed "pained" to be in the room. Later, he was "pained" always in the midst of others. Junior negotiated the deal, always declaring himself only the messenger of his superior.
