Kathryn Long is a native Ohioan, born and raised in Barberton, the "Magic City". She is the youngest of five children, although the closest sibling in age is a brother sixteen years her senior. Being raised like an only child, Kathryn found reading and writing as favorable forms of entertainment. In high school as a member of the Writers' Club, she continued to nurture her writing talent. She has been an employee of the Green Local School system since 1990 and currently teaches SLD students at the high school. Writing took a more serious turn a few years ago as Kathryn completed her first novel-length work and discovered that mystery was her nitch. Early on, determined to improve her craft, she developed a habit of spending most of her free time in the summer and on weekends during the school year, writing story after story. Mystery merged with the color of Native American culture to create Oklahoma's Gold and A Pleasant View. Venturing into cozy mysteries and romantic suspense writing, Kathryn has created three novels with the cozy, Whips, Cuffs, and Little Brown Boxes; a romantic suspense, A Deadly Deed Grows; and the recently completed, Dying to Dream, another romantic suspense. Kathryn has also written short stories, two of which are published in The Piker Press: "A Good Man" and "Betrayal in a Letter". She also has ventured into the young adult genre, writing the modern-day fairytale, Cinderella Geek, under the pen name, K. Sean Jennkrist. Keeping connected is an important element of writing. Staying in tune with what goes on in the writing world and being visible are reasons why Kathryn is a member of Sisters in Crime and maintains a blogsite - Writers & Teachers as well as a facebook page.

Author bio:
NEAL BARRETT, JR'S over fifty novels and numerous short stories span the field from mystery/suspense, fantasy, science fiction and historical novels, to "off-the-wall" mainstream fiction. Reviewers have defined his work as "stories that defy any category or convention..." His “author’s best” collection, “Perpetuity Blues,” was a finalist for the 2001 World Fantasy Award. His two fantasy novels featuring “Finn, the Lizard Master” have been published by Bantam---“The Prophecy Machine,” in 2000, and “The Treachery of Kings” in 2001. These novels were based on “The Lizard Shoppe,” which appeared in Dragon Magazine, and won the “best fiction of the year” award from The West Coast Publishers. In addition to his appearance in numerous magazines, his work may be seen in collections such as The Best From Fantasy & Science Fiction, Nebula Awards, OMNI: Best Science Fiction, Asimov's Robots, Dark at Heart, The Year's Best Science Fiction (Fourth, Fifth, Seventh, Tenth and Eleventh Annual Collections), etc. His novelette, "Ginny Sweethips' Flying Circus" was a finalist for both the SFWA NEBULA Award, and the Hugo Award, for best novelette of the year, and his story “Cush” was a Hugo nominee. His short story, "Stairs," received a Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. Barrett has a habit of crossing genre lines with his fiction. "Sallie C.," from The Best of the West, and "Winter on the Belle Fourche," from The New Frontier, were both chosen for Gardner Dozois' Year's Best Science Fiction. His novel, "Through Darkest America," received acclaim from readers and critics alike. Reviewer Edward Bryant called it "A book of astonishing power...simply one of the best..."

I've always loved Scifi for it's ability to transport you to another realm. For an hour or two you can escape from the troubles of life and be transported to the realm of imagination. Whether that is to the distant future or past Science Fiction always has the ability to amaze. My favorite drink is Inca Kola! Props to you if you even have the slightest idea what that is! :)

I suppose I'll be honest and say I don't like to talk about myself a whole lot. That's probably because I almost never know exactly what to say. But because I know you've taken the time to come to my page and potentially bought a book of mine, I'll give it a shot just for you. For starters I think I can honestly say I'm pretty young for being an author. Writing is kind of an outlet for me. It lets me express myself and my views on things indirectly. Perhaps that is why I enjoy it so much. I can actually give out my opinions while entertaining the reader. Actually I think I'm even better at getting my point across when I'm writing a story than when I'm discussing it directly. I hope if you've read my work that you've enjoyed it, and if you haven't then please feel free to check it out. If you'd like to learn more about me, feel free to check out my blog or Twitter feed. Follow the adventures of a wide cast of characters as they encounter the dragons of the Draconizica empire, and Ashuton Karrucci, the god of dragons going about his daily life in Italy. I have several book titles to offer and, like every other author, I wish to sell my books, but I don’t expect anyone to buy a pig in a poke. In other words, who should I expect to be willing to take a chance on whether or not my writing style is any good without the advantage of sampling its flavor? How many times have you gone into a grocery store and noticed a new product and said to yourself, “Hmm, that sure looks yummy. Perhaps I should give it a try.” But then you recall what happened the last time you purchased a particular food just because the picture on the box looked appealing. -You ended up with a bulk-load of crap that made even the dog wish for a second night of Ramen Noodles. There were also times when you went into a grocery store and noticed a product, along with a friendly person sitting in front a platter full of freshly sautéed bite sized morsels. All it took was one taste to make you want to gobble-up the entire platter – toothpick and all. The same goes for books because so many times readers are lured in by an attractive front cover and sometimes even an exciting back cover summary, but after you’ve purchased the book, or wasted your time lugging it home from the library, you discover that it is not what you expected. Wouldn’t it be grand if, before purchasing a book, you could read a few short stories by the author just to get a feel of his writing style? Yes it would, and that is why I thank Heaven for a smashwords opportunity. Enjoy – toothpick and all. I am operating without an agent, and I have sole and exclusive rights to every one of my stories posted. All of my material has been copyrighted. I will be posting a new story each Monday, on or around twelve-noon eastern time. The length of each story will be at least 17,000 words, and a summary will be posted along with it. A Fairy Tale Contract by TJ Seitz A Fairy Tale Contract by TJ Seitz Oct. 14, 2011 6150 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Another Fantasy Bio: TJ Seitz is a 36 year old high school graduate who lives in the basement of his parent’s house. He’s never worked a job or gone out on a date. He does not own a cell phone or Ipod. He spends his days sleeping in and stays up all night playing video games, surfing the internet and watching videos. Sometimes he reads books on Buddhism and writes essays. He has no ambitions or goals beyond living one day at a time and feels there’s no driving need to leave his home or change his behaviors. He is content with his current life. In jest, at his High School graduation party, TJ’s parents bought him a single lottery ticket for a jackpot worth several million dollars. The voucher was supposed to be a novelty gift. They assumed that TJ had a ghost’s chance in Hell of actually winning and thought that the loss would lead to the age old conversation about whether TJ wanted to attend college or start a career. Instead it turned out to be a single winning ticket for the entire prize. TJ immediately hired a financial adviser, attorney and accountant then invested his winnings. He was set for life and his parents felt humbled. Fantasy Bio: The day TJ Seitz turned 43 he bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle and laptop computer. The next day he woke up, got his kids on the school bus, kissed his wife good-bye, went to work and quit his job. By 9AM he was on his way to Burlington Vermont where he met up with the 18 year old daughter of a woman he dated in college and headed for the Florida Keys. Today TJ Seitz lives on the Caribbean Island of Martinique with his young lover where he runs a small computer repair shop that caters to tourists and locals. After hours and weekends TJ can be found patronizing local cafes with his laptop or debating island politics over a bottle of cheap rum. Reality Bio: On the surface TJ Seitz appears to be a quintessential middle aged male. He’s married to his HS sweetheart and lives with his family (3 kids, a dog, 5 cats, 4 guinea pigs, a rabbit and a leopard gecko) in a suburban split level ranch located on the outskirts of Rochester, NY. TJ spent 20 years in the field of government IT before shifting his career path towards procurement. Learning why/how things work, “pushing buttons” and “stirring the pot” (instigating) have always been inherent weaknesses for Mr. Seitz so administrating computers and contracts within large bureaucracies comes natural for him. While working full time, TJ also attended college part time (and sometimes full time). To keep himself (relatively speaking) sane he majored and minored in non-technology subjects, earning a BA in English with a writing concentration from Saint John Fisher College and a MA in Social Policy Empire State College. He studied with George Saunders and Judith Kitchen (though neither teacher would probably remember him). Distractions like kicking virtual wasp’s nests on BITNET Listservs (predecessors to social networking sites like Facebook), soliciting donations for a Panty Alter fund and hanging out with a heavily medicated professional drummer named Dirtbag interfered with TJ’s ability to write anything particularly noteworthy for either class. He also attended a workshop at the Omega Institute mentored by Marge Piercy and Ira Wood. In reality the stable full time jobs have been serving as functional fronts for TJ’s secret life as a writer. They provided him with money to pay his bills and experiential material to write about. The down side of working in IT and going to college was that he did not have a lot of time to devote to writing and publishing. Adding a problematic first marriage, babies and divorce to the mix did not help much either. TJ’s essays and letters have been printed in both local and national publications. His poetry has been published both United States and England.

Wilson James was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and currently lives on the coast in northern California. He has worked in, on, and around the water, and loves to travel. He claims to be a sailor in addition to identifying himself as an author of adult and young adult fiction. The stories of Wilson James mostly target Young Adults, and describe adventures about family, loyalty, honor, tenacity and courage with various backdrops including sailing, aquatics, downhill skiing, international competition, and success at young ages, set in Europe and North America. As Wilson says, his books are about empowering youth. “If my stories help young people, by giving examples of kids persevering in difficult situations, then I will be very satisfied. If my stories help young people overcome their own challenges, and perhaps find some inspiration, then I will be happy. If my stories help young people find the tenacity and courage to succeed in their own lives, then I will be very pleased. If my stories help achieve some better understanding among friends and families, then I will consider myself fulfilled.” Wilson describes the ultimate reward for writing. “If even one young person finds some example in one of my books that he or she can use in their own life, then I will consider that every moment I spent writing those books was the best possible way to spend that time.” His YA fiction book A FAMILY LEGACY: THE WATSON WORKS made it into the second round of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Another of his titles, PLAYING THE BASEBALL CARD, was reviewed as a "Great Book" and "Very Inspiring" and for more than a year has maintained a sales rank well into the top 1% at Barnes and Noble. He has a number of titles available in print and as multi-format eBooks at Smashwords and other major eBook retailers. One of his books, SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE, made it to the top of the Best Sellers list for Adult Drama fiction. ENGLISH Giovanni Maria plasma was always a big fan of short stories and fantastic adventures. Already by the early years of elementary school writing on small notebooks, given him parents, fairy tales and leads through mysterious planets. Its extreme restraint, however, led him to keep well hidden his passion. The passion was revealed when, during the high school, John found himself writing his first issue of Italian. The Italian teacher to assess his new pupil, decided to write a story with the only constraint that free protagonists were of the same classmates. A corrections carried out, the professor was amazed at the imagination of John, who decided to read to all pupils, its theme, which tells of an adventure through another dimension in which the captain of the expedition, engaged in the rescue of a beautiful princess and of her maid, it was the same professor. The passion for television series, documentaries and movies fantastic was evident in John, from the earliest years of school, when a decade under house just bought a book from the library about astronomy. Despite the incomprehensibility of the text figures John loved to watch and read the short comment. Among his favorite books is the wonderful book "Little Prince" that has much influenced the author, as well as the stories of Franz Kafca. Legal studies, then, absorbed much of the time and writing fairy tales was shelved. However, this was not enough to not to bring out the secret passion. After graduation and a competition between the other, in fact, John began to write in secret, the plot of a series of fantastic tales, which have as their protagonist Iianng (short for John) and two other books which, though independent from the first, tell stories with hidden meanings, carriyng as its protagonist's father Iianng.

April Follies is, naturally enough, a pen name and Internet identity. The fool in question behind the name has a background in science, a weird sense of humor, and occasional pretensions to poetry. I'm fond of science-fiction, fantasy, the occasional mystery, many of the "classics", and antique poetry. Actually, to be frank, I'm fond of reading just about anything I can get my hands on, in a pinch.

Author bio:
I was born in Manchester in the North West of England in 1957. Although I have moved around a bit, Manchester is still both my physical and spiritual home. I am a Northerner. I am also married to Rosanna, and have been now for over twenty years. I have an imagination that began when I was very young and never waned. I also like reading and so it was no surprise I suppose when I started writing. Because I am an unknown who has never been picked up by either an Agent or mainstream Publisher, I am a bit of a one man band. I even do my own covers and have become a bit of a digital artist as a result. I started writing when I was young and very bad. Now I am older and a lot better. My writing has improved too. I write science fiction, fantasy and romance stories. I also like to mix and match with romance in science fiction and so on. Female characters feature very prominently in my stories, many of them in strong and attractive leading roles. The reason for this is that I like women, a lot. In fact I adore everything about them, so it is no surprise that I enjoy reading stories where women feature prominently and that I should also enjoy writing stories where women feature prominently. It gives my stories a female bias, but I think they are better for it. I also like every character, even the monsters and villains, to have a realistic reason for being and doing what they do. Like reality, everything blurs. There is no right or wrong, just different viewpoints that lead to conflict. But I also like my out and out villains to be really bad. If you like science fiction, thrillers and romance stories with particular emphasis on leading female characters that are exciting and adventurous, look no further. My father was born in England to Irish immigrants. Although my Father's attitude to organised religion was luke-warm my English-born mother placated my Grandparents by sending me to a Convent school in Surrey which my parents' could ill afford. I didn't learn an awful lot about religion at the convent, or much else for that matter other than boys but I used to love listening to my Grandparents' stories about their lives a lot of which I am sure were made up to keep the child happy. I live in the country in the South of England with my two children and various pets. When I am not cleaning, feeding or consoling either a child or pet I write stories which I hope are sensitive and humorous.

Matt Sorensen is, of course, a pseudonym. It's taken from his grandfather's first name (Matthias) and his grandmother's maiden name (Sorensen). They were proud, hardworking Danish immigrants like the ones talked about in chapter 5 of his book "In the Bowl of Night." The man behind the mask was born in 1933, served in the Navy more years ago than he cares to remember and writes factual information under his real name. As a fiction writer, he prefers to remain anonymous. It's easier to dodge the rotten tomatoes that way.
